# Write and publish the rules

> Write a rule set, preview it, choose the one players read on the Player Hub, and export it as Markdown.

Write the season's rules on **Rules**. Players read them on the Player Hub's Season Rules page.

You can keep several rule sets, such as this season's and a draft for next season, but players see one at a time. A rule set has a public title and numbered sections, each with a heading and four kinds of block:

| Block | Description |
| :- | :- |
| **Rule** | One rule, numbered `(1)`, `(2)` and so on within its section. The numbers update when you add or move a rule. |
| **Paragraph** | Plain text, without a number. |
| **List** | A bulleted list, one item per line. |
| **Note** | Text shown in italics. |

## Before you start

* You need access to change the rules. Without it, you can read and preview every rule set, but the controls appear greyed out. See [How access works](/get-started/access).

## Write a rule set

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Rules">
    In the sidebar, select **Season** → **Rules**. The **Rule set** list at the top shows the rule set you're editing. The list marks the one players see **(currently shown)**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a rule set">
    Select **Create new** to start empty, or **Duplicate** to copy the rule set you're viewing. Enter a **Public title**, which players see as the page heading, and select **Create rule set** or **Create copy**. No two rule sets can share a title.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add sections">
    Select **Add section** at the bottom and enter a heading. Every section needs one. A new section starts with one empty rule.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add and arrange blocks">
    Select **Add block** at the foot of a section and choose **Rule**, **Paragraph**, **List** or **Note**. To change a block's kind, select the marker to its left, such as a rule's number. Use the arrows beside a block or section to move it, and the cross to remove it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Select **Save** or press Ctrl+S. "Rule set saved." confirms it. Saving drops empty blocks.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Until you save, the bottom of the page reads "Unsaved changes", and your browser warns you before you leave. Removing a section with text in it asks first, and the removal is final only when you save.

<Warning>
  Saving the rule set marked **(currently shown)** updates the Player Hub straight away. To draft changes players can't see, duplicate the rule set and edit the copy.
</Warning>

If someone saved the same rule set after you opened it, saving fails with "Someone saved a newer version since you opened this page. Reload to see it." Reloading loses your unsaved changes, so copy them first with **Export** → **Copy as Markdown**.

## Check it before players see it

* **Preview** shows your rule set, unsaved changes included, as it would look on the Player Hub. Select **Preview** again to return to editing.
* **View page** opens the Player Hub's Season Rules page in a new tab. It shows the rule set players see now, not your unsaved work.

## Put a rule set on the Player Hub

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the rule set">
    Choose it from the **Rule set** list and save any changes. **Use on Player Hub** stays greyed out until you save.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use it">
    Select **Use on Player Hub**. The dialog names the rule set it replaces. Both stay saved.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    Select **Use on Player Hub** in the dialog. Players now see this rule set.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Share the rules elsewhere

Select **Export**, then:

* **Copy as Markdown** copies the whole rule set to paste into Discord, which formats the headings, lists and italics. "Copied as Markdown." confirms it.
* **Download as Markdown** saves the same text as a file named after the rule set's title.

## Delete a rule set

You can't delete the rule set players see. Put another rule set on the Player Hub first.

1. Choose the rule set from the **Rule set** list and select **Delete**.
2. Type the phrase the dialog shows, such as `delete Season Rules`, and select **Delete rule set**.

<Warning>
  Deleting a rule set can't be undone. Export it first to keep a copy.
</Warning>
