# Give someone staff access

> Add someone to the staff console by Discord account, change their roles, or remove their access.

People can use the staff console only once their Discord account has a role. Add people, change their roles and remove them on **Access**.

On the **People** tab, the page calls its list of people the **whitelist**. It shows everyone with staff access, their roles, when they gained access and when they last signed in.

## Before you start

* You need access to assign roles. See [How access works](/get-started/access).
* Copy their Discord ID: in Discord, turn on **Settings** → **Advanced** → **Developer Mode**, then right-click their name and select **Copy User ID**.

## Check what a role allows

1. In the sidebar, select **System** → **Access**, then the **Roles & permissions** tab.
2. Each row is something a person can do, and each column is a role. A tick means the role allows it.
3. To focus on one role, choose it from **All roles**, or search with **Search permissions**. Select a role's name at the top of its column to see its description and everything it allows.

## Add someone

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Access">
    In the sidebar, select **System** → **Access**. The **People** tab opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start adding">
    Select **Add user** to open the **Add user to whitelist** dialog.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter their Discord ID">
    Paste it into **Discord ID**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose their roles">
    Under **Role**, tick one or more roles. The list shows only the roles you're allowed to give, each with its description.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Select **Add user**. "Access granted." confirms it, and the person appears on the **People** tab.

    They can now sign in with **Continue with Discord**. Until they do, the list may show them as **Unknown**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If adding fails, the dialog says why:

* "Enter a valid Discord ID.": paste the whole number and nothing else.
* "This user already has access. Open their record to review it.": change their roles instead.

## Change someone's roles

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open their record">
    On the **People** tab, select the person's row. A panel shows their roles, when they gained access and last signed in, and everything their roles allow.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the new roles">
    Under **Change roles**, tick or untick roles. The panel shows what the change adds and removes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Select **Save roles**. "Access saved." confirms it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If the change adds access, the Tournament System signs the person out, and the message reads "Access saved. This user must sign in again." A change that only removes access applies straight away.

<Note>
  You can't change your own access, or the access of someone who holds a role you aren't allowed to give. Their panel has no **Change roles** list.
</Note>

## Remove someone's access

1. On **Access**, select the person's row.
2. Select **Remove from whitelist**, then **Remove**. "Access removed." confirms it.

They lose staff console access straight away. Their account stays, so they can still use the Player Hub and you can add them again later.
